Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, former CEO of ebay Meg Whitman, former CEO of Xerox, Ann Mulcahy, have all done it. They have reached powerful leadership positions, but it is still unusual for women to assume high level leadership roles. Today’s guest, Alice H. Eagly, a well known expert in gender related issues in the workplace and professor of psychology at Northwestern University, recently co-authored a book with Linda Carli called Through the Labyrinth. The Truth About How Women Become Leaders. On the show today, Alice will share with us her insights on what obstacles women face as they navigate their way to leadership positions and offer suggestions on what needs to be done for women to gain better access to authority in the workplace.

Alice Eagly is a well known expert in gender issues in the workplace. She is Professor of Psychology, James Padilla Chair of Arts and Sciences, Faculty Fellow in the Institute for Policy Research, and Professor of Management and Organizations, all at Northwestern University. She also held faculty positions at Michigan State University, University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and Purdue University. Her research and writing pertain to the study of gender, attitudes, prejudice, cultural stereotypes, and leadership. She is the author of numerous journal articles and three books, Sex Differences in Social Behavior: A Social Role Interpretation (1987), (with Shelly Chaiken) The Psychology of Attitudes (1993), (with Linda Carli), Through the Labyrinth: The Truth About How Women Become Leaders (2007).
