Bonnie,
Those are staggering statistics and truly a tribute the the Madam Presidents everywhere, yourself included. Thank-you for being a voice for women in business and bringing these things to light. 420 New businesses a day is quite an accomplishment for women!

Happiness doesn't seem to be the right question. I think we should ask about the purpose of what we are doing. When we feel our work contributes, makes a difference to others, uses our best talents, and represents what we most value, the daily irritations and discontents fall into perspective. Yoga, etc. is great to unwind. But if the core direction isn't fed by inner conviction, you will never find "happiness." Liane Sebastian, www.wisdomofwork.wordpress.com

Differentiating yourself from competition seems to be the most important purpose of the elevator pitch. How are you different and how do you help others? It's a self-identity issue. The simpler the better. But memorable.
The listener wants to know what is in it for them, so customer need must be upfront. Thanks. I hope your suggestions help a lot of professionals to promote their selves more effectively. Gratefully, Liane, www.wisdomofwork.wordpress.com

Creativity applied to business converges talents, interests, experiences, and stengths. It is a blend of underlying themes with purpose. Part of knowing who you are is understanding the themes that determine your decisions, expertise, uniqueness, and lessons. I am motivated by these themes. One of mine is to discover and encapsulate business wisdom: find wise achievers, collect quotations, pioneer business ideas, study and apply best practices. Purpose of my work or my projects stemm from changes that I would like to see happen!
I agree that you have to craft what you want others to know about you. But most important is to know why you do what you do and let that purpose give direction and rationale to activities. Thanks, Liane, www.wisdomofwork.wordpress.com, wofw.com

I think VAs are a great idea for solo entrepreneurs and have coached some of my clients to take advantage of their services. It's a win-win!

Liane,
thank you for your response! I do believe that professional women's network can be extremely effective if they support ongoing initiatives such as strategic networking, mentoring, and leadership development programs. If these networks are supported by the organization and not seen as just for social networking or simply put to "fix women", they can help promote women to higher positions in the company. My radio show, Women Mean Business, will have a panel discussion on 12/8 with 3 companies that have successfully implemented programs. You can tune in http://www.modavox.com/voiceamerica/vshow.aspx?sid=1612 and select the Dec. 8th date to hear more about these programs.

It seems that you have multipe themes:
1. "fixing" women
2. advancing women's leadership
3. purpose of networking
4. mentoring
5. shifting company cultures
6. collaborations for multi gender concerns
7. opportunities for talent management

Each begs discussion and I have comments on each:
1. 'Fixing" women is not the same as building upon our strengths. Women, in feneral, offer different viewpoints and strategies than men.
2. Supporting women's initiatives is not as simple as instituting policies. Its roots are psychological.
3. Women getting together IS about strategizing and sharing. It is about resources, referrals, advice, feedback, camaraderie.
4. Many professionals involve themselves in mentoring on more of a personal level than organizational.
5. Company cultures are barometers of the business culture at large. They can influence each other.
6. It is shocking how few women's organizations even know each other let alone interface with mixed gender initiatives! Not that this isn't a good idea for certain collaborations, but as an overall mission, has limitations.
7. This is a topic for a separate discussion all together--but deserves examining!

I can understand the emotion of feeling 'flattered' at the promotion to a new position - it is, well, always flattering! But while new doors open for a reason, it is important to ask ourselves what we are getting in return.

Thank you for the reminder.
