1. What is the art of REACH?
REACH! has two meanings. First, it’s about making huge goals for yourself in life and in business, then creating a blueprint for achieving those goals. In other words, REACH!, is about bridging the gap from where you are right now to where you want to go. Secondly, REACH! is about the power of building a massive network, an army of advocates who are as committed to helping you achieve your dreams as you are.
2. How did “reaching” impact your life and career?
Today I own the largest independent real estate firm in Massachusetts. We have 350 agents and we do $1B in annual real estate sales volume. I also am an attorney and own a large real estate law firm. Last, I am the co-founder of a subscription jewelry service called My Little Black Box. Everything I have in my life, including my husband and daughter, my businesses, my friendships, etc, all came from REACH!. I have systematically gone after huge dreams and I’ve created a massive network of advocates who help me achieve them.
One of the ways that I’ve built my army of advocates is through interviewing people. My favorite book is Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. Napoleon was commissioned in the 1930s by Andrew Carnegie (the richest man in the world at the time) to go interview 500 of the most amazing visionaries, leaders, business people, etc, in order to find out their secrets to getting rich. The result in the book, Think and Grow Rich. Many years ago, I decided to do the same thing as Napoleon Hill. I started going out and interviewing business leaders, celebrities, visionaries, and all kinds of different cool people. Those interviews have resulted in me growing a massive network of people who want to help me and my business. You see, I’ve found that we live in a world where it is very difficult to be heard. Therefore, when you ask someone if you can interview them about their life, their business, their obstacles, they almost always say yes. Then, when you sit down with them to interview, you are forced to listen intently to get all the facts. This has created a bonding process for me. Most of my closest friends and business advocates are people who I met through interviewing them. When I first started this practice, I just wrote about my interviews in a company newsletter. Today, all my interviews are shared on my own blog or on Entrepreneur or The Huffington Post. Interviewing people has been so important to my business that I still interview 1-3 people each week. I’ve interviewed hundreds of cool people, but there are millions more I can’t wait to talk to.
3. What in your opinion stops women from reaching their full potential?
99% of the time, it is our own poor mental programming that prevents us from reaching our dreams. It takes a lot of time and practice to change your programming. Here’s the bottom line, the one person we each talk to all day long is ourselves. We hold conversations with ourselves all day, every day. What kind of conversations are you having? The truth is that the stories in your mind become the stories of your life. Therefore, if you are telling yourself bad stories, you are going to have a hard life. Look at where you are right now in your life….that is a perfect indicator of the stories you are telling yourself. If you don’t like where you are, change the stories. I am constantly monitoring the stories I tell myself about myself. As well, I have a series of affirmations I go through every single day in order to set myself up for success.
4. What role does attitude play?
I talk in my book about Tigger and Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh. Everyone has Tiggers and Eeyores in their lives. Tiggers are happy, bouncy, trouncy, and always excited to see and talk to everyone. Eeyore, on the other hand is always a downer. He never has anything good to say and he’s always a drag. The reason this matters when it comes to REACH! is that you MUST build a massive network of advocates in order to achieve your goals. Tigger has no problem building a network because everyone wants to be around him. Eeyore, however, would have a major issue building that network….nobody even wants to take his call because he’s always depressing! If you want to build a network, you need to have an awesome attitude so that you are a people magnet.
5. What do women who reach have in common?
Women with REACH! all have massive networks. If you need something, they’ve got the person that will help you. Women with REACH! don’t JUST have networks, but they have networks they are willing to share. They want to help everyone because by doing so it gives them the ability to further expand their own network. Women with REACH! have great attitudes and they have perspective. In other words, even though they have bad days, they keep everything in perspective so that they realize that the bad days are just bumps in the road. Women with REACH! are often massively successful, but their success road map is lined with failures…lots and lots of failures. Women with REACH! are not afraid to skin their knees on the road to their big dreams.
